Exclamation need help with ipmasq/iptables

I just followed the ipmasq howto for kernel 2.4.x and I'm still having a little trouble. I am able to ping my remote ip address from my win98 machine, but I am not able to ping any other external addresses. I'm using iptables v1.2.2 on rh7.1 with a dialup connection and one nic per computer with no hub. any ideas? thanks

Man, that's pretty harsh.. on a quick search of your name, I got:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...der=descending

On a search of your name and iptables, I got nothing. On a search of your name and www.boingworld.com, I got nothing. On a search of your name and masq, I got nothing. All of these were searches within the networking section.

My point in this is that these bulletin boards do not always keep messages around very long, and messages aren't always in the forum you'd expect. Sure, if he had searched, he could have eventually found the boingworld site and the rules there (in the "workshops" area), but I think the search results don't really support you taking such an indignant, put-out tone with the poor guy. It's quite possible he _did_ search, and missed it. The fact that he started with the howto shows that he's willing to do at least some work to help himself.

Hi

The original response was acidic, and maybe a bit harsh!

If you've got no hub, how are you connecting the machines? I assume you've only got 2 and are using a crossover cable.

It looks as though your RH machine isn't doing masquerade. Check that IPV4 packet forwarding is enabled in your kernel, and try the line..
echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
in a terminal window.

What happens when you try to run your fw script in a terminal window, what errors do you see?

In netconfig there's a radio button you can click, which appears to enable ip masquerade, but i've never fiddled with it.

If you search the forums on my name, you'll see that I've had similar problems. It's usually something apparently insignificant that's the problem.
