Framebuffer Problems

Ok, I've tried every method(including the Framebuffer Howto) to try and get my Linux box to boot the console in framebuffer mode. I have an ATI Rage 128(Actually Rage Fury MAXX, but it's dual 128 chips) that uses the aty128fb driver. This loads fine into the kernel and does whatever it needs to do. In my lilo.conf file, in the global options section I added:

append="video=aty128fb:1024x768-60"

and re-ran lilo

When I boot up it ALWAYS defaults to 80x30 vga mode, and never even attempts to do the video mode I need. My question is this, am I going about this the totally wrong way? I know this resolution works b/c when everything is done booting I can run:
# fbset 1024x768-60

and it works perfectly.
