mandrake 8.0 partitoning

sorry guys i posted this msg in the wrong place

here goes....

Mandrake 8.0 partitions
Hi

I have a 6GB HD and i want to install mandrake 8.0. My CPU is intel pentium III 450 and i have 128 MB RAM. I have been reading some info regarding setting up partitions when installing Linux and so far i understand that:

/boot = 20-25 MB
/swap = amount of RAM

leave the rest for /root.

however i have also read that you should create partitions for:

/home
/usr
/var
/opt

I am the only user on this machine.

Can someone advise me on a good partition setup ?

thanks for ur help

m khan

There are pros and cons to both partitioning schemes. Give this article a read, it describes the differences and suggests some sample partition layouts.

For my 'home' systems I tend to be really lazy and just have a single partition for the entire directory tree, along with a swap. There's plenty to be said for correct partitioning in a 'real' setup but for a home system I don't see that it makes a whole lot of difference. (Having said that my 'server' is setup with a more sensible partitioning scheme, but I want that one to keep working if programs do nasty things, where as my desktop machine gets interactive use a lot so I'd notice if things went wrong)

Just an opinion!

Jamie...
