permissions question

is there a way to automatically assign permissions to files within a directory. I woulds like to use this within my web content directories. I always forget to change the permissions after creating files. I would like to set it and forget it.

Have a look at umask this sets the default file permissions. If you want everyone to be able to read a file you create by default then you set your umask to 022 using
Code:
umask 022
The umask value is XOR'd against the permissions bits. Have a look at the man page for details.
