Unhappy

Got the 2.4.3 kernel and decided to upgrade my 2.2.17 mandrake 7.2 system. Everything went smoothly and I included the new kernel in lilo. Went to reboot and now when I select either my old linux system or my new one, I get the following message after Xwindows fails to load:

-FontTransSocketUnixConnect: Can't connect: error no=2
failed to set default font path 'unix/:-1'
Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

The output message is:

XI0: fatal IO error 104(connection reset by peer)
on x server "0:.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed)
with 0 events remaining.

My sound card isn't working but that could be solved in xconfig so I'm not too worried. This is my first time to compile and install a new kernel so any help would be greatly appreciated!!
