I have an HP Pavilion with both Win98SE and Linux RedHat 6.2 installed on the same drive (30gig) I have used PartitionMagic 6.0 to partition, and that went ok. Linux installed ok, but when I type "startx" a bunch of stuff scrolls down (the last things are about monitor settings and stuff being deleted) and then it reboots my comp. Im pulling my hair out, but want this to work. Somone please either:
1) Let me know what's goin' on
2) Give me an alternative Linux OS to install (Mandrake?) for a newbie and a URL where i can make a boot disc from.
Thanks alot, and looking forward to replies.
Oh yeah, I have the Intel 810i chipset and no actual graphics card. Also, I have a Netgear network card, and was wondering if these are compatible with Linux.
Also, when I start Linux, it will attempt to load up the GUI, and when it screws up, the screen will flash the login, but it will only show up for a second, then turn off for a few seconds, then turn on again. I am almost positive that it is a video problem, but I don't know how to fix it because i cant even login! How do I go aobut uninstalling Linux without formatting my HD, so i can reinstall it?? PLEASE HELP ASAP!!!!
Did you run XF86Config?I dont know if RH6.2(or any other distro with X) supports on-board video. You might want to try disabling it in bios and install a pci video card.

I/m officially giving up on RedHat for now, and am going to put Mandrake 8.0 on. If I install Mandrake, how can i uninstall RedHat? Will the new Mandrake "overpower" the RH? please help. thanks alot lynch.
I would check Mandrake's web site for on-board video support, that is,if you decide to try using your current setup.
If you have PartitionMagic 6,then it should be a simple matter of deleting the current partition(s)you created for Linux and creating them over again. Then install Mandrake.HTH

you must have your gui (x or whatever yu want to call it) configured or you run a small but possible risk of hardware destruction if yu try to run "startx" from your console...
now, it would help to have a video or graphics card or you may have to run from the console forever! good luck! :-)
