Does anyone know how to open up a floppy disk in drive A under gnome?
Also how do you install winmodem drivers and compile and run downloaded applications that are in tar.gz format?
I guess you could say I am a newbie.
Thanks!

To open a floppy you must be root. One way to achieve this without logging in completely as root is to open up a terminal and type su [enter] and then, when prompted, type in your root password and hit [enter].

Once you have become root type:
mount /dev/fd0 /floppy [enter]

At this point you should be able to use a file browser and browse to the /floppy directory.

NOTE: The above will only work if you have a directory called /floppy. If you type cd / [enter] and they type ls [enter] and you do not see a /floppy directory then type mkdir /floppy and try mount /dev/fd0 /floppy [enter] again.

Depending on your distribution you may also try:
mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy [enter]

To unmount the floppy drive type:
umount /floppy

NOTE: There is no "n" after the "u" in umount.
Also, do not remove the floppy disk without unmounting it first!

Have fun.

In Gnome, you can try looking for a shortcut on the desktop that says floppy. Right click on it and select Mount. You should then be able to click on it and view the contents of your floppy.

If it isn't there, you can try clicking on the Main Menu and look for File Manager. You can then navigate through your direstories. It usually is mounted under /mnt/floppy.

Hope this helps.

I usually log in as su from a terminal window. That means I am already logged in as a normal user from the graphical screen/window that you usually log in. Open up a Gnome emulator window and type "su", followed by your root password when prompted.

If you want to log in from this graphical window to get root privileges, log in as root, not su.
