Hi!
I have Red Hat 7.0 installed but I'd like to compile the kernel, I installed the kernel source but fails in the moment of make bzImage or modules ...
well, 2.4.0 is out, i download the source and all that require to compile, but linux-util2.1r (or "o") says:

"On the other hand, the stuff in login-utils defines initial boot-time stuff, things that are done in different ways by different distributions. If you install it, your machine may not boot anymore."

So, what do i do? any experience on this?

thanks in advance ...

What complier are you using? You cannot use the gcc that comes with red hat 7 to compile a kernel. They shipped a seperate compiler to use on the kernel - it is called kgcc.

Question better question ...

Well, first of all thanks for the advice ...
Your answer takes me to 2 more questions ...

How may i compile kernel 2.2.16 (that comes with rh7.0) ??
(I try installing the rpm source, but fails at compiling :-(
may be is fault of kgcc?)

How may i compile 2.4.0?? It suppose that RH 7.0 comes with an appropriate egcs, or no? if yes, it will satisfy with CC=egcs ??

How about the linux-utils? no problem with the new ones? in the readme file says "login-utils defines initial boot-time
stuff, things that are done in different ways by different distributions. If you install it, your machine may not boot anymore. No RPMs are provided - get yours from your distributor."
If there is no problem, I have "o" and "r" versions, what should I install?
