HELP! I have just installed Red Hat Linux 7.0 I didn't have any problems with the installation but when I rebooted and X-Windows came up, everything is TINY! I think it is running at the highest possible resolution. I know this is usually what you want, but I amonly using a 15in monitor. How do I go about chanmging the resolution to something like 800x600?? I have tried several things but nothing seems to work. Any help is appreciated.

I'm quite new to Linux, but I think 'Xconfigurator' is what you're after. Its a console app, and my Redhat6 installation got it as default - dunno about 7 tho.

Try hitting Ctrl,ALT,+ and Ctrl,ALT,- to change resolutions once you are already in X, this will allow you to cycle through the list of allowed resolutions. If the one you are looking for is not allowed then you need to run XF86Setup, xf86config, or edit your XF86Config file. The program mentioned on the previous post might work too, I am unfamilure with RedHat's extra tools.

Thanks for all your help. I did end up using Xconfigurator. I knew about that I guess I just didn't think of it. I also knew about the Ctrl-Alt-Backspace but IMHO that is pretty worthless because it does switch modes, but anything other than the default give you a "virtual" desktop which just makes things worse. Anyway, I am all set now. Thanks!

Correction: I said Ctrl-Alt Backspace in my prev post. Thats wrong, it's Ctrl-Alt- + or - to change modes..

How can you make X-Windows start with a higher resolution?

The easiest way I can think of would be to use Xconfigurator. This takes you through a few selections. One of those is the resolution selections. You can pick multiple resolutions but I think X- will only use it if your video card and/or monitor will support it.

I did use the X-Configurator to pick the different resolutions but I was wondering if you can make X-Windows start in a certain resolution. The best that I can get out of the it is to just select the different resolutions it is capable of and it just picks the smallest one. I dont want to limit my resolution to just one setting (thats the only way I know how to make x start in a certain resolution). It is just that loading in 640-480 and then having to change the resolution is get kinda annoying.
I want it to be sorta like windoze systems that can start in 800-600 if that was the resolution before it was rebooted... Thats what I would like to do.
