I just have a question
I am running Mandrake 8 on a PC with a Realtek 8139 chip ethernet card connected to a hub with a DSL uplink. The DSL works fine IF I AM LOGGED IN AS ROOT.

If I log in as any other user, I don't know how I can connect. When I click on the "Internet" icon on the desktop it prompts for root password, and adsl-start in the command prompt only works if I su.

If I am joe user, how am I supposed to connect? Anyone else using Mandrake 8???

Thanks!!!

If you run Linuxconf, go to the services area (Control Panel-> Service activity) and make the adsl-start service run automatically on startup. You can change in it onther places as well, Linuxconf is just one way to do it. This way the connection will be on for all users, and you don't have to change to root and start it up.

Question

OK now a *really dumb question*

I can't seem to find the "Control Panel"
I have Control Centre and Configure Panel, but neither of those has a "services" area?

On the main KDE menu, choose Run.then type linuxconf
Click the Control tab, then click Control Panel. Choose Control Service Activity. Double Clicl on adsl-start, then choose Automatic, Go to the Run Level tab, shoose Level 3, Level 4 and Level 5. Hit Accept and follow the directions if nay popup.

Unhappy

Thanks for the help!

I followed the instructions but adsl-start was not in the list of services. I am confused because I am connected to the DSL right now. I started it from the Internet icon. (I had to give the root password though). It also works if I type adsl-start in the terminal window. Right now I am logged on as a user and not as root.

However when I went to the control panel, it prompted me for the root password. Am I supposed to be logged on as root as well?

I am a newbie myself and don't use a DSL modem but I am planning on getting DSL. And I use Mandrake 8.0 (It is on every computer I own and my laptop that is stricktly Mandrake.) I was under the asumption that you had to give permission like you would programs. I might make the same mistake when I do it so I am very interested.

Well, unfortunately I haven't been able to get around it. Also my husband's computer does the same thing and he installed the DSL modem to his computer FIRST before he installed Mandrake (I had Mandrake first).

If anyone finds a solution, let me know!!

Give this a try,
edit the rc.local file in /etc (/etc/rc.local)

go to the very end of the file, and simply type adsl-start.
The system should now execute the adsl script on boot up before you login. I haven't tried it, it's just a guess.

hope it works!
