Hello all.
I run a linux gateway to the internet for 3 windows comps.
The ISP we use at the moment is getting very slow, and I have found another one that is fast, and is a local call from here in the country.
The problem is that they use a server assigned DNS, and I dont know to get around this.
I phoned them today to see if I could have the DNS numbers, but they said that it has to be handled by their proxy.
I can ping out to the net ofcourse, and I can access web sites by their ip numbers, but I need to get pppd to use the server assigned DNS.
I use wvdial, and read somewhere about the "Auto DNS = 1"
option, but this didnt work.
I normally just put the DNS numbers in the nic properties of the Windows comps, but this is different.
Any help is welcome, as I dont know a lot about DNS.

Are you ruunig one connection for 'net connections and a different one to get DNS???

You can roll your own DNS server as long as you take steps to keep it safe. Start with the obligatory suggestion to buy the O'Reilly book "DNS and Bind" by Cricket Liu and Paul Alblenz(sp?). Phenomenal reference and guide to 'doing' DNS.

Holidays coming up soon, so I would like to do some reading, and learn how to set up a caching DNS.
For now Im using a free DNS server in the UK, and the new ISP is hooting!
