I'm moving to Linux, and would like to know which distribution everyone would recommend for my PC
(Basic Specs:
AMD Duron 700,
64MB SDRAM (Upgrading to 512 soon)
36GB Hard Disk (30GB Free)
External Modem
LAN Card)
Any suggestions would be appreciated
BTW, this computer would be used for a part time webserver, possible game server, and otherwise for programming.
To address your question, maybe you should give a vfat version of Linux a try before you reformat? What exactly is a vfat version? Well it's one that can be installed on a Windows partition without having to format anything at all.
PhatLinux is one that comes to mind, and Linux Mandrake comes with Win4Lin, which also is a vfat version.
Alan Cox is one of the maintainers of the Linux kernel, AFAIK generally seen and the number two guy... He runs http://www.linux.org.uk/ and is employeed by Redhat kernel hacking full time.
I would go with mandrake 8, not 7.2 because i heard its junk. I personally run red hat 6.2 and find it very easy. But if i was you i'd with mandrake 8.
just my 2 cents...
