You'll have to excuse me, I'm a newbie and know only a little about linux. I currently run redhat 7.2 and downloaded some stuff that came in .tar.gz format. Well i gzip -d the file then tar it and now i have the main file but when i type the filename it doesnt run the file.Am i supposed to gcc it or supposed to type /<filename>? Any help would be greatly appreciated

check the readme or install files for info. it's normally

cd to the directory the files located then
./configure
make
make install

then if you ever want to uninstall it

cd to the directory the make file is in and

make uninstall

but its up to the person who made the tarball as to how to install it, so again, check the included text files for directions
