Hi!
I'm using Red Hat 6.2 on a Dell Dimension 4100.
Since my machine came with a factory-installed 3Com internal modem (a Winmodem [which is pure problems with Linux]), I went out and bought a U.S. Robotics 56K external modem for use with Linux.
I used RP3 to set up my modem connection, and it does seem to work OK.
However, I do notice that my overall webbrowsing performance using Netscape/Linux/56K_external_modem seems ~very poor~ (e.g., at least twice as slow) compared with IE5/Win98/33K_internal_modem.
I think that my problem may lie in the configuration settings for my new modem, but I'm not sure.
My big question is this: How can I tell the actual speed of data transfer for my modem in Linux? The RP3 Dialer seems to display a bar graph in real time, but no numerical data. What is my actual connection speed???
Thanks very much,
aethereal
