This is not such a big problem, but it's really getting on my nerves. Every time I drag across the desktop to select multiple icons the square dotted line "smears" across the desktop. I attached a screen shot in case you don't get what I'm talking about. I contacted the manufacturer of my monitor and found out the sync ranges are:

Horizontal: 30-70kHz
Verticle: 50-120Hz

Have you defined your monitor correctly? Could you not be a bit more specific with what it is?

It's a Proview, but I forgot the exact model. I read the numbers on the back to a Proview tech support guy, and he told me the sync ranges. Anyway, it's newer than Red Hat 6.1 (that's what I'm using).

You then might want to check out http://www.xfree86.org and see if there are any updated drivers or what not else or reported problems with that particular monitor. It might need an update of xfree86 even.

There weren't any Proview monitors at all in the list when I installed RH 6.1, so I picked "Generic Multisync" and changed the lines in my XF86Config file. I thought it would work fine at 800X600. I was thinking about upgtrading to ver. 7.0, so maybe I'll just wait...

I just thought that I would let you know that at the moment I am testing my Video Card with Linux and trying out different configs. During a regular install with Mandrake8.0 I decided to choose version 4.03 of Xfree86. This actually caused the same problem which you had.

I know that you probably haven't got 4.03, but that you may also not have version 3.3.6. I would suggest trying to upgrade to this version first so that you can make sure that it isn't a version problem. I think that that is the version used by RedHat 7.0 so an upgrade may work.

If I find out the answer to my prob I will let you know.

upgrade to rh 7.1, the last thing you need is the possibility of more problems... rh7 has a lot of bugs, not that they weren't diligent in bringing 7.1 to the table before everyone ran for cover, but hey, 7.1 is stable as all get out.



and to let u know, i had the same problem w/ mandrake 8 and my hp m50 monitor, but rh 7.1 kicks, and uses the 'good' version of xfree86. extra.extra. get ur kudos in 7.1... sorry i'm a little excentric (not to mention fanatical.)
