What is it about Mandrake that you don't like? I am running Mandrake 7.1 and have it running very well on a P3-550 with 256M RAM, voodoo3, SB32. I am just wondering. I do have a copy of RH 6.2 or 7.0 (depending which one they get) coming soon.

It's not really that I DISlike Mandrake, I just don't really LIKE them. They started as a Red Hat clone, and have shipped some fairly buggy releases. I haven't installed 7.1/7.2 so things may have changed, but I probably won't even bother to try new mandrake releases. I try new Red Hat, Slackware, Debian and SuSE releases and that keeps me busy enough.
I am a former Mandrake user. I shitched to Red Hat and have been very happy. Mandrake is 90% junk (like 12 text editors). Mandrake is bundled with outdated packages and has many bugs. It is well liked by newbies because of the half-decent installer.
Mandrake also leaves out some preffered libraries by default. This is another pain.
One incident I had and still cannot find what is wrong is when i tried to put fidelio on mandrake.
What version of LM where you running? I am running 7.1 and I did do a custom install so I didn't end up with a lot of useless stuff and I've been happy with it. At least so far, I will try LM 7.2.
mandrake sucked. I ran 7.0 for awhile. Then I went to 7.2 because 7.0 wouldnt reconize my network card after I installed it, and it even upgrading to 7.2 it doesnt. An now I cant run quake
I used to run Mandrake 8.1 too, but then i got sick of all the crap that they put on there and yes, you can remove it all but it takes too long so i just use Gentoo. With Gentoo you make your OS how you WANT it, and thats what i like.

and I do the same with a mandrake install. the way I like it.
and I don't have to remove things.
I've only been using Linux for a couple of years, and still consider myself a n00b. I've used Mandrake,Suse,Corel and RH. (want to try Slack or Deb but haven't had the time). Right now I use Mandrake 8.1 because when I first installed Linux on my box, my friend, who has been using Linux for years, suggested it for its n00b friendliness. I still like it after 2yrs...Used the expert install to kill all of the junk I don't need and installed Ximian. For my uses (primary work laptop, little bit of Perl/Python and the occasional dvd) it's great. It really wouldn't matter to me what distro I used (as long as it isn't Corel, that distro was terrible for laptops). Just my .02 cents.

If you take the n00b route and do the default install you will get a lot of junk, but it's not just for n00bs. You can use the expert install and pick & choose whatever apps you want installed.
I think of Mandrake as RH+ since it's basically the same as RH but with a smoother install and more features.
I started using Mandrake 3 years ago when RH became too much of a pain to work with (talk about bugs! RH sure isn't exempt from them). I haven't regretted switching one bit.
