I don't quite have the answer, but I had this problem before and I just got rid of the NFS and portmapper software off of my box and it stopped. I am sure this isn't the answer that you are looking for but you can try the following links.

It seems to me that the package you installed is conflicting with the module you are using for your NIC. I can't imagine why this is happening since it has nothing to do with networking at all.
The first thing I would try is recompiling the kernel and include this module into the 'builtin' kernel. This would most likely clear up any module conflicts. I don't know if this is the correct answer but then you would at least know for sure that this package is not conflicting with the module any more.
