Need to query how many disks the system recognizes

I have been advised never to use #fdisk -l
and the command #mount isn't what I want. What command should I use to show me all the disks (floppies, hard drives, USB drives, CDs, etc) the system has recognized?

Code:
cat /proc/partitions
will show you about whats on the harddisk etc, but I dunno about USB or floppies.
