In attempting to upgrade Red Hat V7.0, kernel 2.2, to kernel 2.4, I have managed to 'tar' util-linux-2.10o.tar.gz (per the "changes" file).
-
Next step, as I understand it, is to:
1. cd to /util-linux-2.10o
2. type './configure'.
3. type 'make'.
4. type 'make install'.
-
I got to step 2. I saw several lines informing that "you have..." and "you don't have..." and "you need"
-
here are the "don't have's" and "needs":
-
You don't have inet_aton()
You don't have <linux/blkpg.h>
You don't have <linux/kd.h>
You don't have --NR_pivot_root
You need <linux/tqueue.h>
-
There was a message"Assuming that you want to enable nls support, (Otherwise, edit defines.h and remove the line with ENABLE_NLS")
-
And another message: "Your rpcgen output does not compile".

Can anyone tell me what this all means?
Should I continue with steps 3 and 4, or should I go looking for something?
What is nls support?
What is the problem with rpcgen compile?

U can check dependencies by searching rpmfind.net:
util-linux-2.11b-3 RPM for i386(RedHat):
Requires:
pam >= 0.66-5
/etc/pam.d/system-auth
/sbin/install-info
/bin/sh
/bin/sh
ld-linux.so.2
libc.so.6
libcrypt.so.1
libdl.so.2
libm.so.6
libncurses.so.5
libpam.so.0
libpam_misc.so.0
libslang.so.1
libtermcap.so.2
libutil.so.1
libz.so.1

util-linux-2.10o-6mdk RPM for i586 (Mandrake):
Requires:
pam
/bin/sh
ld-linux.so.2
libc.so.6
libcrypt.so.1
libdl.so.2
libm.so.6
libncurses.so.5
libpam.so.0
libpam_misc.so.0
libslang.so.1
libtermcap.so.2
libutil.so.1

Even if u dont install the Rpm, u can know what dependencies must be satisfied before it can be compiled/made.
Other suggestions would be checking for availablility of the development packages kernel-2.4-dev ,egcs-dev, glibc-dev, or going tru the motions, meaning install kernel-2.4 source (unpack, read the ../Documents part on dependancies) compile and make a kernel to be sure all dependancies on that part are satisfied.
