Hi, Im new to the board and new to Linux.

Heres my problem. Im using Caldera open linux 2.2
Im trying to set up dhcp through web admin.
I keep getting error when I enter subnet info.

Network:192.168.100.1 subnet: 255.255.255.0
Ip-addr range 192.168.100.10-192.168.100.50

error= range is not on net 192.168.100.1/255.255.255.0

Ive already set the shared network as 192.168.100.1( this is my servers ip-is that what i use?)

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

(My network is the Linux box and two Win2K clients, I have another 2 Win2K servers in the lab but I want to work this out before I attempt to configure a domain with this configuration>)

network for what you have there is 192.168.100.0

start with address 192.168.100.2 ...192.168.100.1 looks like it is used by server

DNS

Which file do I specify this in?

I use named for DNS it is a daemon, I sets itself in the init folders, or you can use tksysv or your versions equivalent to it. Or use startup scripts.
it has to be configured somewhat, where to get addresses from, maybe reverse address resolution, etc.

For dhcp you have to tell it what you want to provide, address ranges, netbios, DNS server, gateway server, etc. for each interface.

The config file is empty on default on my distro so Howto is needed.

You will have to read the howtos on each of these servers to configure them. They will explain it in detail, configuration and how to start, etc.

Samba uses swat, and has to be configured. Without a howto it is just about impossible to get it to do anything.

DNS and DHCP are easy to setup and only take a few minutes.

Samba has so many things you can do with it, it is more involved in setting up.

I have found the Howtos on these very good and easy to follow.

Thanks again, I have it all set up. It works. I been playing around with this with a 2K pro client and a 2K member server.Dhcp,DNS,Samba all work.....I just want the services to start when I bring the Linux server up. Right now I have to manually start the services....I just recieved my first book so beleive me I will be reading!
