Jeremy:
I wasn't specific about the type of drive I have purchased and installed. It is a Western Digital Ultra ATA/66. My copy of Linux is Linux-Mandrake 6.5. It will not mount on my new drive. I've been told that I should wait for a later kernel version, perhaps 2.34 or later. One that will recognize the controller on this new drive.
Don't know if this info changes the suggestions you made initially, but if so, please let me know.

Also, since hearing some scarry stories about Mandrake, I'd appreciate the address for mirror sites where I can download Red Hat.
Thanks!

The suggestions would remain the same. You would need to either download/install a distro that supports UDMA/66 or see if there is a way to put the drive in UDMA/33 mode. I know for the drive that I have (an IBM Deskstar) there was a utility available on the IBM website to do this.

Thought you may be interested in the following link. They have links to various ATA/66 disable utilities (including a western digital one) and a lot of useful information about Linux ATA support in general.
