Question

I had a problem with slow telnets between my windows box and my linux box at work. I tried a caching DNS server which works fine except there are many users who may access this box and we are running on dynamic IP addresses on a 10. network. I think if I understand the caching dns properly, the first time you attempt to connect, it remembers your ip address and allows the next connection to happen without the slow reverse DNS. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I can disable dns resolution all together on the linux box and that solves the slow telent problem. I do not want to put all of the possible dynamic IP addresses into the /etc/hosts file. Is there a way to allow dns resolution but still be able to telnet to this box over a private network (10.63.1.*) and not have it take forever to connect because it is trying to perform reverse DNS?

I know it is not the network because my VNC server responds immediately upon connection.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

All windows and the linux box use dynamic addresses in the range of 10.63.1.*

No static IPs.

You using DHCP to server out the dynamic addresses? If so it sounds like you need to a full DNS and have DHCP update this when it serves out the addresses. Its not something I've done but I know some people on the Bristol & Bath Linux Users Group have, you can register at http://bristol.lug.org.uk. You might also want to check out http://www.linuxdocs.org to see if there is a HOWTO...

The problem I've had in the past with slow telnet connections has been due to trying to resolve either the servers hostname or the hostname of the machine that is initiating the connection... (at server side in both cases)

Have u checked up the DHCP settings, I hope ur ISP may not be a problem for I m also an ISP engineer.

Slow telnets may be due to IP clash ,check that. Also check the % of packet loss by pinging then we can sort out...
