Question

Can someone please help me to set up a DSL connection. I will try to give some information as possible:

OS: Mandrake 8.0

DSL modem is external connected to PC by a ethernet network card (D-LINK DE-528CT which I believe is supported). This setup works OK in Windows 98 or ME, so i know it *should* work.

When I type ifconfig I see this information:
eth0: Link encap: Ethernet HWAddr: 00:50:FC:23:7B:FD
inet addr:10.0.0.10 bcast: 10.0.0.255 mask 255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX Packets:38 Errors:0 Dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TXpackets: 416 Errors:0 Dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes: 2280(2.2KB) TX bytes: 68016(66.4KB)
Interrupt: 11 Base Address: 0x4000

lo: Link encap: Local Loopback
inet addr: 127.0.0.1
--- rest of lo stuff ----

I am concerned because this machine has 2 ethernet cards in stalled, the other one is connected to a hub which is connected to a second PC (also runs Linux). the second card is a RealTek 8037 chipset (supported). So I think there should be eth0 and eth1??

All I know is the computer doesn't know it is connected to DSL (it can't find the internet) It thinks it is not connected. How can I install the second network card, how can I find out which one of the 2 network cards is installed, and how can I connect to the DSL!?

Real newbie here.. please tell me exact instructions, I get lost easily!!!

Many thanks!

It appears that you have eth0 setup as the card you want to use for your LAN, this is ok you should see it listed that means it appears to be working ok.

Look for adsl-setup it will walk you through the setup of the adsl connection. During the setup say you want it to run on eth1, when you launch adsl-start it will start a ppp0 interface which will use the eth1 card (if you type ifconfig after adsl-start you will see it listed). Perhaps you could check Linuxconf or a Mandrake network config tool to make sure that both cards are installed. Hardrake will also allow you to view which cards were found on the machine.

You may need to get the adsl software from the CD, not sure about Mandrake 8.0, however in the past the package was called rp-pppoe-xxxxx (something like that). so rpm -Uvh /mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS/rp-pppoe-xxxxx.

I noticed your from Canada, that is what I used to do in order to connect to Sympatico which I assume is your ISP

Thumbs up ok.....

Well I typed "adsl-setup" at the command line.. how easy is that? I wish I had thought of that! :-)

It asks me everything step by step, including all the PPoE stuff (so I assume it's setup OK)

One question, how can I tell wheter to use eth0 or eth1, for the DSL, because I don't know which eth is the D-LINK and which is the Realtek? I want to use the D-LINK for DSL and the Realtek card to link to the hub. (for a shared DSL connection.)

Many thanks

Unhappy UPDATE

AHHH!

OK, here's the results of my ADSL setup.

First I typed adsl-setup and told it that I wanted to use eth0. Setup went OK, then after I typed adsl-start, It didn't seem to connect to the DSL modem and timed out.
(wrong ethernet card, I gather)

So I re-did the adsl-setup thing, and told it I wanted to use eth1.

This time on adsl-start, it seemed to connect to the modem (the lights on the DSL modem flashed) but the connection still timed out!!!

HELP!

Unhappy RESULTS

Well here are the sad results:
After rebooting the machine, it NO LONGER detected ANY ethernet card. With ifconfig only detected lo.

Netconf and the Mandrake control panel told me that the cards were still installed.

WHAT I DID:

Removed the D-LINK 8029; completely re-installed Mandrake 8 with only one ethernet card in it and it has worked without a problem since.
