Exclamation BORROWED ANSWER!

Unix implementations are usually pretty similar. I run Solaris. In my
$HOME/office52/program directory I see another directory,
Solaris_JRE_1.1.8_09a, which contains all the java stuff for a user.
Do you have this? I think that lack of this directory of java stuff
just might cause your symptoms. BTW, I simply used the JRE that came
with SO so didn't have to get the JDK. You should be able confirm this
quickly. You might want to compare what steps you've been doing with
my How-To at http://www.staroffice.fsnet.co.uk/install.html
Maybe it will help catch something you have missed. THIS IS A COPY AND PASTE FROM THE STAR OFFICE SITE. I AM NOT THE AUTHOR OF THIS--I JUST FOUND THIS-- MAYBE IT WILL HELP US.

Just get the runtime.

Quite frankly I forget what the Java does. I think it's so that you can run applets built for the various StarOffice apps (the browser?).

Last time I checked the Java runtime was not required to make StarOffice go.

I've been running staroffice since it was from the boys over at StarDivision (before Sun picked it up) and I only recently installed the version with the Sun JRE. I can't taste the difference.

"I can't believe it's not Java!"

(sorry)

Unhappy

Kaboom! ... a bright mushroom cloud looms terrifyingly over the landscape ... I downloaded the Star office files needed for installation, i downloaded the JRE Thingy, installed the JRE thingy and then no more apps would launch and my RH7.1 did a creepy Windows thingy where the desktop just freezes and when i forced rebooted it, it won't boot anymore...

Frustrated, i just popped in the CD and reinstalled everything! good thing it took just about 24 minutes to install and another two to get into the net!

okay... let's see I'm guessing that you first install the JRE before the Star Office... now the question is after installing the JRE thingy, does one need to install the plugin? this is whare all hell broke loose an hour or so ago. so if you do have to install... how? i tried to folow the instructions but maybe a newbie like me just won't get right.

The correct install is:

/usr/local (this is where jdk is rpm -ivh )

Then install StarOffice in /home (so that all users of the system you are installing on don't have to completely install the office package) and when it asks for the "Java Environment) point it to /usr/local/java/jdk-1.3.* and it will find it. I have gone off the deep end though and can't get rh 7.1 kernel 2.4.3 upgraded to 2.4.4 but that is another post.
