Hello, I just installed linux mandrake 6.1 with an old gateway 2000 75 mhz, 16 meg ram, netgear card. install went fine, real slow but fine. I installed the nic on install and chose static ip, with 192.168.10.10.
Ok now when i ping from the windows box i get replies but half the time?
I just installed linux on a faster machine using the same cat5 that i had in the 75 mhz and it runs fine.
I think it might be x windows taking up all the mem and processing power should i run just from the command line instead of x?

any ideas would be great, thanx.

It wouldn't hurt to try, a 75Mhz with only 16 meg running X will gobble up some resources. You can try to eliminate some process by killing some that your not using and see if that improves your speed or response from pings.

so fast, might sound dumb but, this is what im going to do, when i get home. cntrl alt backspace to close x, then try to ping, if not better, how would i end things running? is it kill? because when i do a "ps" theres only 2 things? thats why i dont think its kill

Try doing "ps -aux". That will show every process that is running.

kill -9 pid (process id number given from ps -aux)
That command will kill any process with no questions ask and you don't have to confirm by saying yes or no.
