Somebody help me PLEEEEASE!

I upgraded to mandrake 8.0 from 6.5. When it installed I told it to install all the development packages.

BUT--Java doesn't work in web browsers and in my terminal window the commands "java" and "javac" give this message:

"bash: java: command not found"

I went to the software manager and tried to install Java packages again, it said it installed them but still I get the same messages. I tried to type "find java" at the command prompt in the / directory and it said no such file or directory.. (They did away with the graphical find utility in 8.0)

Somebody help!! how can I get a JDK running?? If I have to download something, can you tell me the instructions on how to install it? Too much Windows use has made me wizard-dependent

THANKS!!!!

Java should be located at /usr/bin/java. To check if it is there try:
Code:
whereis java
If it is there you may have to check permissions, they may be set incorrectly. If that does not work, try uninstalling and re-installing it.

Which browser are you using? If you are using Konqueror, you have to go to settings and actually enable Java, for some reason it is not enabled by default.

Cool Ok so maybe I have 3 javas

Hi not sure I would recommend what I did. I could not find any place I downloaded it also. Even Like on Mozilla kept getting failed errors for the java plugin. Geeze and I would go in and try to find the sun java-- nothing. On both accounts get this. Login as root and Mozilla java plug- in went right in and the Sun java showed right up. Both times had to download as root. I think I have something set up wrong here but hey it worked. And someday soon I hope I figure out what I am doing. Ok soon I will run out of harddrive space I am sure. Hehe but by then I hope I know how to find them and delete some files.
