Question RH 7.1 & Promise Ultra66

Hello, has anyone installed Red Hat Linux 7.1 on a system using the Promise Ultra 66 IDE controller card?

I have installed Mandrake 7.0 on the system and it detected the Ultra66 card automatically. I've tried Mandrake 8.0 and it doesn't work as well.

i havn't installed a utlra 66 ide card but i have installed a fasttrack 66 ide raid card (from my understanding is the same thing) and it works great. you can go to promise.com and get the drivers for both of the cards.

to install, just run the text install, tell it you have a device, put in the disk and you are ready to go. you shouldn't have any problem. the instructions are on the website.

I've been to promise.com and checked out their linux support page. I wasn't able to find a driver for the Ultra66 card - could I use the FastTrak66 drivers?

I have downloaded the Ultra66 drivers for RH 6 and it didn't work with RH 7.1.

Thanks

The 2.4.x kernel comes with the Promise drivers. It is the pdc202xx.c source file.

I have a Ultra100 card and it works good now. I had some problems before with the card intermittently locking up the entire system, but I solved the problem by switching disk drives. I previously had a 10 Gig Seagate ATA66 that would lock the machine up over time if used. I switched to a 15 Gig Maxtor ATA 100 and it works great.

One thing I do not do is boot off the card. There is no real reason, I just have a smaller drive on the motherboard IDE controller and I just left it there as the boot device.

BTW. Promise does not distribute Linux dirvers for the card. I think they used to (they wrote the original) but it seems they have pulled support for Linux.

HTH
