hey everybody,
the next thing on my things-to-figure-out-list is installing applications from source. i havent done too bad so far with my little experience. last night i removed the apache rpm(along with php and all the depends). and today i have a fully functional apache-1.3.19(not php yet but thats ok). i was pretty impressed, as previously the only thing i installed from source was gnuchess. i have several questions, but it seems that most of the tutorials available have mixed opinions, or i just cant find them. here are the questions.....
1. when installing source where is the best installation directory for a program such as apache or mysql.
2. when i need to uninstall a package, for example i am going to upgrade mysql. how is that done, or can i just 'make install' and not worry about the previous version? mysql is NOT installed as a rpm.
3. to expand on the previous question a little more... is the uninstall process program specific? if i understand the tut's i have read, the ability to uninstall a program depends on the makefile. right?
4. last one! when a program, for example apache, is installed by default on the first install of a distribution. where does it default the path to.
hey, i appreciate any help. these are questions that have been bugging me for a while, and im tired of reading and reading and reading and still not understanding. if theres anything unclear just ask, ill be watching! oh yeh im using mandrake 7.2 - kernel-2.4.3. thanks again.
In answer to ure:
1. most packages will suggest a "best" installdir, either in the docs that u read before installing (sure...) or the configure files. sometimes a "./configure --help" will reveal em, sometimes theyre based on OS detection, Apache bein a nice example for that. Next to that there's a standard called FSSTND now superceded by FHS 2.0 which gives recommendations for organising the filesystem. (just look it up if ure interested).
2. 99% of the time Ill delete the old files before installing newer ones. I save the install log from a previous install when I did "make install 2>&1 > ../install(appname).log"
3. some apps do feature something like "make uninstall", I still use stuff under point 2.
4. path of the files where the html files are served from or application path? theyre both in httpd.conf...
hey unSpawn, great answers, that helped.. oh yeh what i meant by number 4 was not just for apache, but apps in general. what would the 'Program Files' of linux be.
the reason for this is that mysql was installed by mandrake, and now I want to take it out. im not sure what all files to clear out. i know that i must clear mysql out of /usr/bin, but is that the only place? the mysql lib files in /usr/lib and /usr/lib/mysql, should they all go? are there anymore files that would "HAVE-TO" be removed?
oh yeh, in number 2 youre saying to direct the output of 'make install' to a file and then when you want to remove the app just find and delete all the files from the log. good idea.
thanks for the quickness of the reply, i think im almost clear on it!
kewl, kewl!
If uve got the "whereis" command on ure box u can try run
"whereis mysql" and itll show the locations of the app, its config and the manuals. Id say u got the delete places right, maybe check /etc for a config file also. Btw, if MySql was an rpm, theres an rpm command to uninstall it (look in "man rpm")
YUCK. Program Files. :-]
I guess itd be /usr/local/bin, cuz thats where the apps local to the box *should* be.
BEAUTIFUL! thats it, i got it. 'whereis' pointed out all the dirs with mysql.
no, mysql is not a rpm but thats cool, im about to start cleaning out its files and then start installing. thanks for the help.
