Pinging outside world

Hi,

My linux server can no longer ping the outside world !

Over the past few days I've been setting up email and web on this machine and whil it used to be able to ping the outside world and I could surf the net from it, I can't get there anymore.

Any ideas what I've done to cause this ?

Something that I find very strange and don't even know where to start looking is that it can ping my Win98 workstation (192.168.1.5) on the LAN, but not the router (192.168.1.1).

Sounds like an issue I had once. Your firewall settings maybe so high, that its not letting anything come back to you.....you may want to check it out!

Thanks for the advice, perhaps I should move this over to the newbies side, because to the best of my knowledge, I don't even have a firewall configured. Any idea how I can confirm if it's running in the background ?

Also, I find it very strange that the router and server are the only two interfaces that can't ping each other ! The router and server can ping every other interface on the lan, but not each other !??

Any other suggestions ?

On your linux box type # netstat -r
does your default router match the gateway of the router.

post the results in here and I'll tell you.

Also what's the error message from ping when you try and ping the router. ?

Thanks for the offer, and sorry for the delay we've got public holidays coming out of our ears down this side of the world and I've been away for a while.

I have managed to resolve the problem, as so often in the past, it turns out it has nothing to do with Linux !

My network administrator had a static routing from our router to the linux box that seemed to cause it to get itself confused. Ping either interface from the other bounced backwards and forwards between the two !
