I am trying to mount an nfs share on a linux server. Both the machines are running RH7. I am able ping the machine so I know that I can access it.

I am getting the following error:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on emperor:/tmp,
or too many mounted file systems

the line that I have in my fstab is:

emperor:/tmp /rtmp nfs defaults 0 0

on emperor i have the following line in the /etc/exports file:

/tmp gentoo

I'm sure I've just missed something stupid!

Question: Your kernel supports NFS? And the portmapper is running?

I am currently using the default kernel that comes with RH7. I believe this supports nfs as I use the same config @ work and have no problems! The portmapper is also running!

What about that line in your fstab:

emperor:/tmp /rtmp nfs defaults 0 0

change it to something like:

emperor:/tmp /rtmp nfs timeo=15,intr

what happens now if you try to mount it?

Have you tried mounting if from the command line:

[root@machine]# mount -t nfs emperor:/tmp /rtmp

Have you tried mounting it from itself? On the exporting machine, issue the same command.

If none of those work.. try '/usr/sbin/exportfs' on the NFS server to make sure the directory is exported.

Make sure that portmapper, lockd, and statd are running.

The command rpcinfo -p will generate something like:

program vers proto port
100000 2 tcp 111 portmapper
100000 2 udp 111 portmapper
100011 1 udp 749 rquotad
100011 2 udp 749 rquotad
100005 1 udp 759 mountd
100005 1 tcp 761 mountd
100005 2 udp 764 mountd
100005 2 tcp 766 mountd
100005 3 udp 769 mountd
100005 3 tcp 771 mountd
100003 2 udp 2049 nfs
100003 3 udp 2049 nfs
300019 1 tcp 830 amd
300019 1 udp 831 amd
100024 1 udp 944 status
100024 1 tcp 946 status
100021 1 udp 1042 nlockmgr
100021 3 udp 1042 nlockmgr
100021 4 udp 1042 nlockmgr
100021 1 tcp 1629 nlockmgr
100021 3 tcp 1629 nlockmgr
100021 4 tcp 1629 nlockmgr
