I am having a lot of problems running Xwindows with my Matrox G200 card. I first set it up with the XFree mga_drv.o and it worked fine. Then I saw Matrox had a newer driver, I downloaded it and it worked once, but after I rebooted and loaded Xwidnows, I got the evil black background problem (you can see icons, by no text anywhere). After searching around I found out that the Matrox driver wasn't all that great and a little buggy. So I switched back to the XFree mga driver. It worked fine, but after a reboot the next day, I encountered the same black screen problem. Now neither driver works correctly. Any thoughts???

What G200 do you have? According to http://www.xfree.org/cardlist.html the Mystique and Millennium G200's are supported using the XF86_SVGA server. If you have the Marvel G200 This should help - http://www.cs.brandeis.edu/~eddie/mga4linux/

I have a Millenium G200 and I've had absolutely no problems using X with it. I would recommend running 'xf86config' from the command line, and select the G200 when it asks you to choose a video card. It will set you up with the XF86_SVGA driver that comes with XFree86 which works flawlessly with the G200. You shouldn't have do mess with any modules or anything of that nature.

yeah, i think i overwrote the Xfree driver with the matrox beta one somewhere along the line, because it said it was using the built in one, but the display is still wrong. If you can, I'd really appreciate it if you could send me that mga_drv.o file, or let me know where I can find it.

thanks

Depending on whar version of glibc you have you can get the XF86_SVGA server from:

ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/3....vers/XSVGA.tgz
or
ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/3....vers/XSVGA.tgz

I downloaded it and uncompressed it and now I have XF86_SVGA. I'm not really sure what to do with it. I ran it, but that only brought up a black screen. I'm completly lost :o)
