Looks like you will have to wait then, unless you know how to program or hack the kernel. Where does it say that the official drivers only work with kernel 2.2.* ?
Distribution: Redhat v8.0 (soon to be Fedora? or maybe I will just go back to Slackware)

Well... yeah... the RPM's are binaries. They are compiled with a certain kernel and other packages in mind. If you don't have those packages, then they won't work.
Get the tarballs or SRC.RPM's.
Follow the instructions on the webpage at Nvidia to the letter and it will work.
