hi all!
stupid question here.....i'm supposed to run a webserver, i've configured httpd and restart it..and mail server is up and running (I'm using qpopper..basically everything's ok with ftp and telnet...but when I got into gnome and tried to use netscape, i couldnt! duh!
help, anybody, on how to enable netscape so that i can surf the net? or maybe some documentation?
THANKS!
When you say you couldn't use it - did it not start or didn't you get the page you expected from your httpd?
a bit of clarity needed I think! If you did get any errors what were they? Starting Netscape from an xterm can be useful as any errors will be returned on the command line.
I think jharris hit the nail on the head. Running Apache and having Netscape not work are mutually exclusive problems. Usually, if Netscape doesn't run, it means your network configuration is incorrect.
Double-check that with netcfg from a terminal window as root.
hi all!
thanks jamie and gonzo-john..sorry for not posting the specifics, i'm like that sometimes ...anyway, i could start netscape but when i tried going to,say, www.yahoo.com...it said that it couldnt find the page or something....
err....could you explain a bit on how to run netscape from 'x-term'? THANKS!
Ah right - you're trying to get out onto the web?? You need to configure your internet connection using something like pppsetup or Kppp (I think thats what it's called!) - I'm not going to attempt to step you through this as pppsetup asks all the questions, and I know nothing about the kppp way of doing it! Have a search of the forum, then post specific qestions back here, or even better, start a new thread about setting up your inet connection - it'll get more attention that tagging another question on the end of this old thread.
As for starting netscape from an xterm - if you are in X and get a terminal up (a window with a command prompt in it) and run netscape from there by typing netscape & (the & starts it in background so gives you the terminal back straight away instead of rendering it useless until you exit netscape) then you'll start netscape as per usual, but any errors produced that aren't poped up in a window (very few of them are!) will be reported in the terminal you used to start netscape. This can be useful when things are not working to plan...
I'm having some problem similar to Katana's first post of this thread. I'm trying to connect to the internet via Netscape in GNOME and am having one hell of a time getting it going!
>Excuse my language!<
Anyway, anybody got ideas? I did not configure httpd, cause I don't know how! Also, does anyone know if I can switch between Win2K and Linux whenever I want in a dual boot? If I can, it will most definitely save my knees! (Right now, I'm alternating btwn 2 machines and switching all the monitor and keyboard/mouse cables everytime I want to use Linux or Win.)

Yeah, I was sat in work providing 'technical support' (if you can call it that with the questions I get asked!) to staff and students at my uni... but as all the exams are over there are currently about 5 members of staff around and fewer students hence I was bored stiff so sat on the board waiting for posts... Sad I know but I seem to have read the rest of the internet in the last few days at work At least I have aircon
You can definately dual boot Win2K and Linux... have a search of the board for posts about it, there have been quite few, at least one in the last 2 days.
Now, all I really need to know, beside the setting up default and choosing which OS I want to startup with and figuring how to make my shiny grey box log on to the internet, is how I can change OS int the middle of some applications, ie. not having to reboot to get to the other OS. I know this might not be making a lot of sense, but if I can change OS' at a whim, I be really
The only way to really change OS without a reboot is to run something like VMWare and get your second OS running in a Window. Its not something I've played with though. You might also be interested in playing with WINE. WINE implements a bulk of the Windows APIs under Linux so you can run your native Windows applications under X with varying success.
Thanks a lot guys!! I've never seen so many replies heheh...anyway, i'm gonna try running linux in x-term and do the troubleshooting..wish me luck!
oh,and i'm starting a new thread about un-tar-ring files in sun solaris..i'm trying to untar majordomo.tar.gz in sun, but i got errors! can you guys look it up??
