Cool

Hi

I own a Compaq LTE 5300 laptop with Mandrake 7.1.
I use an Olitech Speedcom 2000 external modem to connect to the net.

No problem with connecting to the BT line, using kppp. But having moved home, I have changed over to NTL's free internet service - and here the problems started.

The modem tone dials out, but the phone carrier line completely ignores it, as if I had just lifted up the handset without dialing anything.

I have tried different modem commands through a terminal, and I am told that the UK does not support guard tones ( which I don't think is the issue anyway ).

Before I rush out to buy a new modem, can anybody tell me of a similar experience and any possible solutions?

Help will be much appreciated.

i also use ntl but i have not had such problems dialing in. if it connects without the guard jobby then maybe our phone lines don't support it.

i personally don;t use guard tones.

i am having a similar problem; i am using corel ( :/ ) linux 2.0.16 with a conexant softk56 (win)modem. i downloaded an olitech driver and installed a winmodem patch. when i try to connect to the internet through kPPP, i hear a dial tone, but the modem dials nothing and says 'NO DIAL TONE'. i have queried my modem, and it brought back all the right info. anyone find a way around the winmodem problem, or should i start looking for a hardware modem?

Hi,
I was stuck with BT and their troubles for linux users are well documented. Father in law uses ntl but I wasn't impressed with that either. Try this site:

i think my problem is with the winmodem/linux incompatability; i've tried accessing both my earthlink and eskimo north accounts, but with no luck.
