The best way to get started would be to read around a subject/topic you want to use (such as installing Linux!). You will find loads of info at http://www.linuxdoc.org and http://www.linuxnewbie.com and also any search with http://www.google.com can produce info on topics about Linux.

Buy a book if you can, because it is better to have something which you can constantly refer to and read in your spare time. Learning Linux was my guide, although I feel that it didn't take on board the GUI's which are now very common.

If I was you I would use a completely spare HD to install Linux onto, and just mess around. Get used to installing software (tarballs - .tar.gz), and using rpm's or debs (files which are like the Windows installer in ME and 2000). Probably the easiest distribution to use would be Mandrake or Red Hat, although SUSE also have a good solid distro. To view the distros goto http://www.linux.org
