I just wanted someone to confirm to me that it is possible to hook up two Linux laptops using just an Ethernet cable and that I don't need to get some kind of switch like they have on sale at Sears for $100.

I've been able to hook up one of the laptops to the corporate LAN. Later I tried to get these 2 laptops to talk to each other using this Eth. cable and gave up in frustration.

Thanks,
-Dan

You can connect your two laptops together, but you will either need a switch/hub or a crossover ethernet cable.

You can buy a cheap hub for about 30 bucks or you can make or buy a cross-over ethernet cable for less.

It is likely in your attempt to connect the latops that you were using a stright-through cable. Straight-through cables will only work with a hub or switch.

Good Luck
