I haven't got a motorola modem - so haven't got it to work but I would say to you that you should join the http://www.linmodems.org mail list where you can ask for advice from some very experienced people.

Well at least when I was last using it they certainly seemed to know what they were doing, and I am sure that they have succeded with installing the driver.

Thumbs up sm56

I've downloaded the Preview driver from the Motorola site and installed it on a Mandrake 8.0 system. The only glitch I've found so far is that if I log off from my ISP I can't get the modem to dial up again without rebooting.

The critical thing about this driver is that it only works with Linux kernel 2.4 so if you're using an older kernel it simply won't work. As regards installation, just follow the instructions in the Motorola documentation.

I have installed SM 56 driver in PCQ linux 7.1(a new varient of Red Hat Linux 7.0). the thing is dialling properly but is unable to connect to the isp. as soon as dialling is over it disconnects the line.
