If I want a user to have permission to run an app (like MRTG) as Daemon. Which group do I add the user to? Or do I have to do more?
I tried adding the user to the root group. But then there were still problems with managing logs..

And then there is the usual problem when installing Linux appz.. I doesn't work as you thought it would, which leaves you with manual editing of a cfg file with parameters from hell.. lol

You can create a group specifically for that program, and assign the permissions accordingly.

I would recommend installing the SUDO package.
It lets u control who can run what applications controlled/reserved for root/system.
Its easy to set up and maintain.

Bout the configuration, that aint the problem!
Most apps will set up a generic cfg to let/force u to change it. No boxen are alike u know, specially when u go cross platform. Anyway since Linux is so configurable, this is the price u pay (and the knowledge u gain)

thx.. I'll have a look at both..
Did try the group thing though.. guess I'll have a look again..

Yes.. I know that systems are different, but could I plz have a GUI to do the changes?
I just find it quite annoying to have to read up on how the .cfg file syntax is for most apps when I know how it should work..
So I spend a lot of time on knowing what I want from the app. but not being able to get it to do it :\

I'm only managing our server here cause no1 else can or will. I don't think it's funny and I don't get paid for it..
Guess that's why I'm getting a bit annoyed from time to time..LOL
