hey, i was just wondering what the best modem would be for linux, that is a lin modem of course. I dont feel like bothing to try to get me pc tel modem to work. I dont want to spend a lot of money either(im cheap). Any suggestions?
It could be a 14.4 or 56k, it doesn't matter to me. thanks
Any hardware modem will be fine. I wouldn't go with the USB option at the moment. Lots of internal modems are not true hardware options (so called WinModems), some are supported under Linux (http://www.linmodems.org) if you already have one. Any external modem has to be hardware so will work fine. Have a look at the various serial and modem howtos at http://www.linuxdocs.org
do you know the general prices for an external 56k modem that will work in linux? or where the best deals are online or in stores. I am getting cable in december but dont want to wait that long to get my linux box online. So i dont want to spend a lot of money on a modem. Thanks for the information!
Get any external Hardware modem with a serial port interface. You may well end up paying more than a PCI modem, but in terms of ease of use and getting it to work it will be money well spent. If your in the UK then I would recommend Dabs http://www.dabs.com
