Can't hang up my modem

I am running Red Hat V 7.1 together with
wvdial and Netscape V 6.01.

In order to get on the net, I have to get a terminal screen, then issue the command 'wvdial', then click on the Netscape Navigator icon.

Questions

1.) Is it possible to write an executable program that does all this in one step? If no, where do I start?
2.) Or is there something already written that does this?

3.) Also, if I am on the internet and kill the terminal screen that I used to start wvdial, there doesn't appear, to this newbie, that there is a way to disconnect from the net without logging off and logging back in. How do I disconnect if I have lost my terminal screen?
