I had earlier posted a thread asking for help on how to get Oracle 8i installed on Red Hat Linux. I have a RD 7.0 running and wud any of you be able to tell me if at all I can install 8i on 7.0 or do I need to DOWNGRADE it to RD 6.2? Also if you can direct me to some Oracle 8i-Linux forums or share your experience on the installation or advise me about the patches that I need to apply....I would appreciate it very much.
Just a bit curious....There were about 40 'reads' on my last thread but not a soul replied to it. Is it because of an aversion/indifference to databases in general? I had a concern if this was the wrong section in the forum for my post but after much thought I thought this would be the apt place to post it since it deals with both installation & distribution related issues.
So plz help me with this folks!

I recently did the Oracle 8i install and if you follow everything step by step it isn't too bad. I have a great link for you, but I can't seem to find it anywhere I'll post it when I find it. Do make sure that you download the latest patch from the oracle site - the original CD's had some nasty bugs. I would really recommend that you use 6.2 as red hat 7 is pretty buggy.

Thanks, Jeremy. I went through RedHat's site and in one of the discussion forums there was a post on 8i installation on RH 7.0. It is due to some incompatible version of GLIBC(and I don't know what GLIBC is...some kind of a 'package' compiler?). Not very reassuring. I guess I'll downgrade to 6.2 as you say. Iam new to Linux. Would I be missing much by downgrading to 6.2?

Do send me the link whenever you find it. That wud be very helpful. I'll be installing 8i over this weekend and will post the 'outcomes' once Iam done.

I saw that 8.1.7 was certified for RH 7.0. So I downloaded this version and tried installing it. It also came with a patch that had to be applied after installation.
The installation went alright. In the sense, the system didn't crash or hang up. It ran the net8 configuration assistant and I even managed to create one listener. Now I have a problem....Iam not able to run netca or netasst(the net8 config tools) after the installation. It says that oracle.java.netca application or class not found.... I cudn't get the instance started with the lsnrctl start command. It also threw up a lot of errors like message not set for listener or something like that( I can give you the exact details if you think it wud be useful). And notwithstanding all this I tried creating the database....and it was struck in it's first step itself and the progress bar was at 0% for more than an hour( i have 250 mb on duron 750) and I decided to kill the DB creation.
Ok. Here is what I think....The installation is probably clean but Iam not sure what to do after the installation. I have installed it on a windows 2000/nt before and everything was almost intuitive. Iam not sure if I need to do anything extra for linux, after the installation, to get my listener running and to create a new database...
Any suggestions? I am planning to give it a try to get the listener running today, if not am going to reinstall the whole thing today

Oh! The world looks a beautiful place after my (nth) attempt to install oracle 8i ( 8.1.7) on a Red Hat 7.0 went off successfully. Most of my attempts were troublesome because I had overlooked some aspect or the other that was mentioned in the installation document. Now when I followed it correctly this time, my oracle is up and running....It's soaring like an eagle, purring like a mercedes...The sound of the exhaust fan running on my desktop sounds like music to my ears now after 4 dreaded days of failing efforts....I shall rest in peace today, content and satiated with my success.

Ok..Cutting thru all this crap.....the bottomline is FOLLOW THE INSTALLATION DOCUMENT VERBATIM, from the technet site, and the installation should be cool. Oracle certifies 8.1.7(rel 3 of 8i) on Red hat 7.0. I'll let you folks know if I encounter any problems....
