Lightbulb

I was reading through some of these posts about peoples good and bad experiences with different linux distros and it got me to thinking.

I use Mandrake 7.2 currently on 3 different computers all with completely different hardware. I have had no troubles with installation(30 minutes max) on all machines. I do not like aroura or grub very much and I don't like the fact that I couldnt choose what to install even in expert mode(but maybe I was doing it wrong). I had to install apache, mysql and PHP manually(which is a pain in the but with all the strange dependencies).

Anyway, I was thinking that I have had less problems with Mandrake 7.2 then I have had with windoze(my sound works in linux but not in windoze??) so I think this is the greatest thing to come along since the pyramids but at the same time maybe this is the worst distro that there is but I wouldnt know.

When I first got into linux(this will show how new I am) I tried to install Redhat 6 and Mandrake 6 and Turbolinux ?(which Turbolinux was awful). Mandrake was just easier to install and configure at that time so I stuck with it and have had no complaints.

My question is - Can someone suggest a distro to try on one of my machines so that I can compare the difference between the different ones? I dont want a suggestion because its the only distro you have ever used and you pledged your soul to that one forever.

I was thinking about trying Caldera, Slackware, Suse or Debian. Let me know what you guys think and sorry about the long post. Oh yeah, and do you guys have suggestions on where to pick up CD's of these(i dont have a burner and i dont want to download em).

Talking One last thing <--- FLAME ON

What about freeBSD?(let the flames begin)

Alot of us switched to linux because we heard good things about it and to get away form windows. So far it has worked out pretty well.

But what bout freeBSD? I have heard some good thing about it and I beleive the new Mac OS X is based on it(probably because the licensing is softer so its easier to charge for).

I hate to be kept in an OS cage. Has anyone tried it? I think I will install that and then let you guys know how it went.

This is not a knock against linux, just a matter of getting the whole story so we can all run the best(relative) OS in town

Let me know what you guys think about this point before I go get it and install it

If you want to try a new distro right now I would recommend Debian. You could also try doing what I do. Install one of everything

I have a few extra machines that I installed pullout hard drives in. That why I can install a bunch of different OS's at a time. I also tried to see how many OS's I could fit onto one hard drive once. I think I made it to 34.

I have installed most of the BSD's and FreeBSD is probably the best to try first. The install is pretty straight forward and the ports idea is wonderful.

Talking Free Linux!!

Well after sifting through alot of stuff and trying to determine which distro to download I decided on Slackware because they had the easiest to follow instructions on how to download and install from hard drive. Unfortunately I decided to download in windows and the file was about 800mb. Windows didnt make it to the end of the download before crashing so I gave up.

I was angry and wished I could just get a distro on cd. Then while looking for a new machine I stumbled across this site. http://www.pogolinux.com/systems/acc...x/linuxcd.html not only do they have good machines but they are giving away one free distro on cd a month to anyone who asks Just fill out a form and they will ship it to ya.

In the suggestion box I asked if they could make it a subscription style service and send me a different one each month

Well it looks like my first test distro is Caldera Openlinux
