Okay, I built a Samba Server box and it's connected to the network, but for some reason it won't browse in my boss' Windows 2000 Network Places. It keeps saying that it's not found, but sometime or another it did see it, because it's in the list.
Okay, that worked. (Although I can tell it's the morning cause my brain didn't know that!^^) Anyhoo, since I'm still an Linux-not-know, if it says it's sharing in the 'Name' domain, then only those people can see it?^^
Distribution: Redhat v8.0 (soon to be Fedora? or maybe I will just go back to Slackware)

hrmmm..
I don't think so.. I am not sure and I dont have my SAMBA book here at work.
If the shares show up okay when you issue that command, then you should be able to view them in Network Neighborhood.
do you have another Linux box from which you could check? Basically, I guess you need to isolate the problem by finding out if its on the server or client side. If another Linux box can use "smbclient" to view and access the shares, then its probably not on the server end. How about a Win9x box? Do you have any of those that can view the shares?
hi kittyhikaru & KevinJ,
that was a discussion i was perticularly intrested in. sorry i have no suggestions for ur queries but a question of my own.
u talked about using
smbclient -L localhost
and seeing the shares on my own machine. now i want to know how u share a particular directory in linux.
i have been trying to get my linux machine on the network for the past one week but sadly not getting it right. my lan card is installed and i am able to browser on the net perfectly but my machine does not appear in th network neighbourhood.
hope any of u can help me.
thanx
