As for Samba? Dunno if there is a story... I think its just called that because it implements the SMB protocol... Anyone on the forum know any better?
I heard a story about Andrew Tridgell searching a linux spellcheck dictionary for words including smb, as his original idea was someone elses copyright. May be at samba.org, or in the using samba intro.
The other option was salmonberry or something.
