Unhappy

I managed to get RH6.2 to install to a second hard drive, dual boot with Win98SE. However, I now have the problem that my disk size has shrunk from 4GB to 2GB, it's this 'cos it's in Linux's format, not FAT32?

Also I'm having problems with PPP. I can use kppp to connect to my ISP but then nothing recognises that there's an open connection to the net. I've also tried to set up PPP by going through the following menus:

RedHat > System > Control Pannel > Networking > PPP

I think that's right (I'm new to Linux so that may be slightly off...). When I try to set it up manually the modem dials but doesn't connect, it just keeps retrying over and over. The modem is and external, serial, hardware modem, it's a Topic 56k connected to COM port 1

If you need any more info please let me know

Cool

this isn't the answer you are looking for, but being a fellow newbie i thought i would pass it along...

i ran into all kinds of configuring nightmares on rh 6.2 a year ago and actually gave up on linux at the time. when version 7 came out, i spent the 29 bucks and tried again. it literally set up every piece of hardware on my machine to working order in less than an hour and i have been on linux ever since. its a cheap answer, but i would suggest getting version 7. if youre in san francisco, you can borrow my disks. grin.

vance.

What do you mean your hardrive shrunk? How did you install Linux and how big is your hard drive to begin with? Did you install Redhat on its own separate partition?
What ISP are you using and are there any error's after trying to dial? I think there should be an option in the PPP setup that limits the amount of times it tries to dial out. Set it to a certain number and see if it comes up with any errors. Or are you using Kppp or the PPP setup in GNOME?

Right, what I mean by the hard drive shrunk is it was originally 4Gb FAT32, it was almost full so it was formatted in Win98 then repartitioned in the Linux setup to Linux;s own file system. It now registers as only 2Gb not 4.

RedHat does have it's own partition yes. The entirity of that drive (that registers) is currently partitioned for Linux. I have another 20Gb hard drive also install that is is FAT32 with Win98SE on.

As for kppp errors I'll have to get back to you later on that

WOW! Don't know about that one then. So the 4GB that was repartitioned for Linux in Windows, is now only 2GB when you installed Linux. I just want to get it straight cause I have never seen that bofore.

The hard drive was originally the primary drive for my computer until I got the 20Gb one. The 4Gb originally registered, both in the BIOS and Win98, as 4Gb.

The 4Gb hard drive was formatted in Win98 a few days before I got Linux. While booting the computer (and in the BIOS) it now registered as 2Gb (something like 2112Mb) but in Win98 it still registered as 4Gb.

When disk druid ran during the installation of RedHat 6.2 it told me that the partition for that drive was 2Gb too big (concurring with the BIOS's new opinion on the size of the drive). I deleted the FAT32 partition and repartioned in Linux's own format: 64Mb to <SWAP>, about 500-600Mb to /boot and the rest of the 2Gb for the root /.

Why Windows always said it was 4Gb and why the BIOS changed it's mind after the drive was formatted baffles me :/

Incidently kppp is now working, I think the problem was I didn't specify the primary and secondary DNS addresses for my ISP

Seems to me now, it looks like your drive size is neither Linux nor Windows, but your BIOS problem. You might want to try to restore your defaults for BIOS, but that wouldn't help now since Linux is installed with only the 2 GB. You would have to reinstall everything mostl likely would be my guess or well Linux if the BIOS recognizes the total 4 GB.

Ok, I'll give it a go I haven't installed anything much to Linux yet anyway so it shouldn't be too hard to reinstall
