unSpawn is right I have thier 3rd edition of DNS and Bind
and its a great book... running DNS isn't hard to do
(believe it or not) I do it on a dialup machine where I work
its just something to play with to keep me busy learning.
I've been thinking about doing the same on my DSL box at home.
The hardest thing for me to remember is to change the Serial number after editing the zone file...
and maybe remembering to put the dots after the MX, NS and CNAME records....
I had a hard time getting virtual domains running at first
I searched a good while before I came up with a solution.
I only have one IP address so if you will have the same dilemma
this is what my httpd.conf file looks like:
(if I'm doing this wrong somebody please let me know)
NameVirtualHost IP.address.of.yourserver
<VirtualHost IP.address.of.yourserver>
DocumentRoot /var/www/html/ (<--this could be any Dir)
ServerName jim-bob.com
ServerAdmin jim@jim-bob.com
</VirtualHost>
and then it would look the same on down the line
except it would be a different virtual hosts pointed to different Dirs....
mine doesn't get much more complicated than that and it works great.
Of course it can get more complicated you can CHROOT your domains to make it more secure
(from what I've read I havent gotten that far yet....
