Hi to all (yet again)! I was thinking about buying a new modem and another 128 MB RAM... I was thinking though... is it okay to just pop in the RAM? and what would be the proper way of changing modems?
If you have a more modern bios it's just fine to pop in the ram, you should notice quite an improvement if coming from a low ram system. If not your going to have to do some small configuration in /etc/lilo.conf to make sure that your system registers the true amount of system memory.
The modem is a totally different issue. Winmodems can be tough to setup due to driver problems. If you can try to make sure you don't get one and get a modem that is supported in linux(various websearches can help you here). Of course if it's recognized and on the same com port you won't notice a thing different when connecting.
thanks j... I'm using an external modem and thanks for the info... one thing though ... I've read from somewhere ... ( I think something like the debian install info) that if your modem is a 33.6 you set it as a 56k and a 56k to a 115200. I s this true?
I think the modem speeds they are talking about there are the speeds between your modem and your PC not the speed your modem will run at over the phone line.
As for the RAM, all I did was pop it in and it worked fine. I am using Mandrake 7.2.
