Hi.
I am trying to install Red hat 7.1 on my machine. I have 2 drives installed. 1 SCSI and one IDE. The SCSI drive is my boot drive with Win2K installed on it. I have installed RH7 on the IDE drive and installed LILO on the first sector of the IDE drive. My plan was to just use the NT Boot Loader Menu to be able to start Linux. I am , however , unable to get this to work. I know you have to make changes to the Boot.ini for this to work and I have done that. However when I pick Linux from the startup menu, my machine just reboots itself. If anyone has any ideas or reference sources I would REALLY appreciate it.
you might want to have a look at www.littlewhitedog.com, under "reviews". a guy there (rover) has written a manual for setting up dual booting win2k and linux using the win2k bootloader. you might find help there; i suppose it could work the same way with nt.
good luck

chekov,
Thank for the tip. That page looks like it could be very useful. Unfortunately, I had already tried most of what that page says to do. I have a rather strange setup which doesn't really help matters. When I copy the Linux boot sector to a floppy and then copy it to windows and try to boot all I get it "LI" when I select Linux. I really have no clue what to do from here.
My Configuration:
SCSI Controller:
9GB Drive - Boot drive with Win2K installed
IDE Controller
Primary Master - 8 GB Drive - Dedicated to Linux
Secondary Master - CD-ROM
If the SCSI controller BIOS is enabled then the SCSI drive boots to Win2k. If the BIOS is disabled, then I get the LILO prompt and I can boot to linux. This is a pain but at least I can boot without a floppy. If anyone has any ideas how to correct this problem, I would like to hear them. Thanks!
You have a geometry mismatch on your drive. I've never had the problem so you may have to play with it to get it to work. Unfortunately, when you re-install LILO with changes, you must update the file you copied to Win2k to make it effective.
I think there is another way to setup the geometry other than trying the linear option which I'm not sure if it will work, so I recommend you check the lilo.conf man page for more information.
Hey,
Thanks for the information! I am going to try some more things today. BTW, those pages you gave me the links to are GREAT! That looks like stuff I could use to study for the RHCE exam. Thank You!!!
The combination of the SCSI and the IDE controller creates a problem. I read about this in a RHCE book that I bought, I don't remember the solution or if there was one.
I am willing to bet that if you use GRUB instead of LILO, the problem will go away.
At this point that doesn't suprise me. I have heard GRUB mentioned a couple times but haven't ever used it. Does it have a homepage where I could get it?
