I seem to always run into this problem, let me see if I can explain it well enough.

The only part of my webserver that is ever accessable seems to be my main page, http://www.<website>.com. I can't seem to find any permissions to fix so a user account can have a personal webpage. Each time I try to access a user account's page, I get the 404 error with netscape:

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /~<user> on this server.

Apache/1.3.12 Server at <site>.com Port 80
The only thing I can think of that might cause the forbiddin error to come up is the fact that I do all of my httpd.conf and apache editing with root. But that still doesn't seem to correlate with user accounts being inaccessable.
I can never seem to find any information about this on the FAQ at apache.org, nor can I seem to figure out what to change in httpd.conf. Any suggestions? Thanks.

You made the required changes(UserDir: and some below it) in httpd.conf? Permissions for httpd.conf should be NOT readble/writable by others.

And if you have made the changes did you remember to restart Apache?! Not that I've ever done that myself!

hehe

Yes, I restart apache after I make changes in httpd.conf. I had to change permissions on home directiories and the htdocs file... That's kind of a pain to have to do everytime a user wants to have a webpage though...
Anyway, I fixed it last night, but every time I tried to delete this thread, it kept saying I wasn't logged in. (right after I logged in, of course) Odd...
Thanks for the suggestions.

Hi,

I had the same problem with the apache and I installed Telnet and bam!!! It's done, I don't know if this is the real solution but it I didn't have the same error message after installed telnet to the linux. I think it opened some ports or something, i don't know. It's been only two weeks since I have started learning linux... Anyway, just give it a try...
