Do you have a bootable CDROM and a capable CDROM drive? Use the CD and exit the gui install. From there you can go to the manual install and 'boot from an installed partition'. Tell it where your root "/" partition is (eg /dev/hda3). Remember that you are looking for the root, not '/boot'!!!
If you can't boot from CD...
GO get the boot disks from SuSE ftp for your version.
ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/7.1/disks
Get the bootdisk, modules, and modules2 images. (If you have a pretty standard setup you can skip the modules and ignore the 'Insert the Modules disk' when starting the setup). Then go to the dosutils folder and get the 'rawrite' tools. READ THE README! (nag, nag, nag...) Make the boot disks and go to the manual install. Follow the menus and you should be ok.
